BT Home Hub 5

Post by Bernie320 »

I am shortly about to switch to BT Infinity Fibre Optic and was wondering if I can configure my iPac 7800N to work without having to use the BT Home Hub 5 at all, or do I have to plug my 7800N in to the Home Hub 5 then configure it. I'd prefer to stick with the 7800N as I use a Dynamic DNS and whilst I believe the Home Hub 5 has this feature, I'm not sure you can stipulate how often the Home Hub 5 logs in and updates the IP address, you can in the 7800N (mine is set to 5 minutes) and I'd rather stick with the 7800N because I know it works!! I also realise the Home Hub 5 has a better wireless standard, but I don't use the 7800N for wireless, I use an Apple Time Capsule for that!!

The 7800N is not a VDSL modem, so you will have to plug the 7800N to the HH5 using the EWAN port on the 7800N.

Dynamic DNS will not work on the 7800N, as the 7800N will get a internal IP from the HH5 (as you cannot set the HH5 into modem only mode)

If you go down this setup route you will have to ensure both devices are set to a different LAN IP, to avoid IP conflicts

Thanks. The fact that the Dynamic DNS won't work in that case means it's pointless me using my iPac 7800N for that, I guess I'll just have to stick with the HomeHub 5 on it's own then

Yep or get your hands on a open reach modem or the Bipac 8800NL, (Bipac 8800NL can be sent to 'Bridge' mode then dial in with PPPOE on your 7800N and Dynamic DNS will work)
