Hi just joined the forum and have a simple question.
I'm trying to set up a "white list" of Trusted URL's but it dosn't seem to work as any URL can still be visited.
If I set it the other way and set certain URL as forbidden then they always get rejected, but setting URLs as trusted seems to make no difference.

I'm obviously missing something! Any help would be great.

Domains Filtering: This function checks the whole URL address but not the IP address against your list of domains to block or allow. If it is matched, the URL request will either be sent (Trusted) or dropped (Forbidden).

So if you set a URL to trusted this will be allowed, and if you set the URL to Forbidden then that URL will be blocked.

If I set http://www.bbc.co.uk as trusted - then I will be able to visit the site.
If I set http://www.badstuff.co.uk as forbidden - then I will not be able to visit this site.

What I wish to do is set http://www.bbc.co.uk as trusted and therefore by definition, as this is the only trusted site, all other sites should be blocked.

Block all sites except trusted sites.

I don't think the 7800N can do this, the only option is to add URL you want to block, and set them to forbidden

Ok, there seems little point setting a site as trusted as it serves no benefit.

I agree setting sites as forbidden does work, but it seems a case of unknown unknowns - as I don't have a list of all the inappropriate sites I may wish to block.

From what I remember when I tested/Tried it

The reason for setting "Trusted Domains" is to override the Key Word filtering
For example if you set a filter keywork of "google" any url with "google" in it will be blocked
such as http://www.google.co.uk and http://www.google.com

you can then set google.co.uk as a "Trusted Domain" and this will allow access to http://www.google.co.uk but still block access to any other domains containing google such as http://www.google.com

what you could do is block any URL containing . [dot] by entering that as the keyword to filter, which should block all fully qualified domains/URL's and (StandarDot-decimal notation) IP Addresses as they will all contain a . [dot]
And then your whitelist should work to allow access to just those domains you trust.

After speaking to our engineers, they have also suggested another way to do this.

1. Add all trusted web sites
2. Finally add a rule with the domain name as www and type forbidden

So you setup should look like the attached screen shot

The main thing is to make sure the www rule is at the bottom of the rules listed, also shown in the screen capture.

while most sites start www not all sites do
you would still be able to get to http://translate.google.co.uk for example

Or more to the point you could get to http://theproxyfree.com
Which would then allow you to get to blocked sites via a proxy.

I think blocking the key work . [dot] (Or for that matter /, anything that appears in all URL's)
(Or adding . [dot} to the forbidden domains)
would still be the better option as it woild catch/block more (if not all) internet sites
