Mail Alert with 7800DX and Firmware 2.32e

Hi
I'm aware this topic has been explored before with some people unable to use the mail alert facility, eg.
viewtopic.php?f=19&t=4012&p=13080
... using 1&1 mail servers I get the same response as the author of the above topic ie. 503 Bad Sequence...
Forunately they resolved their issue using a Google mail account. I tried this and could not connect. I tried 2 more mail servers ie. Fastmail and BT Mail but all fail to deliver any alert emails. I have tried all combinations of 4 mail servers, with & without SSL/TLS checked and ports 25, 465, 587 and 995 but the 'Account Test' always fails with a variety of errors such as the '503' error above, lost connection (timeout) or even no error... the accounTest.html window just keeps periodically refreshing.
This is very frustrating, this feature should work easily enough. I have a Synology NAS on my LAN which sends error/notification emails to my Fastmail account using smtp.fastmail.com, SSL/TLS and port 465 with no problems at all through my 7800DX.
For those of you who do have Mail Alert working, do you have any suggestions as to how I can get this working ? Did you have to do something extra in the end to make it work for you ?
Thanks, Pete B.
