Line Attenuation no data displayed

Post by noriga »

Hi
I have recently joined sky fibre 40/10 and I monitoring my line stats as in the first 10 days of service.
Having bought this vdsl combo (Bipac 8800nl) I have noticed that line attentuation always reports 0 values

Is this normal or there is a way to have this displayed?

Also, how does the below values compare to a good line status?
Are there too many errors or any concerning values that you can see?

Mode VDSL2

We should be releasing a new firmware soon, with a new DMT code (VDSL code) for the Bipac 8800NL, with this firmware it should show the 'Attenuation Downstream' value, I think Broadcom are still working on the upstream value.

As your connection is new I would suggest leaving the device on, for the 10 day training period, it does seem like you have some HEC errors but this will have to be checked with the ISP once the 10 days training period is over, to see if the error rate is acceptable

Thanks billion_fan, you the one I took the example of the VDLS connection settings for Sky in the other post. Without this I dont think I would have gone buying this product. Thanks a lot for posting this trick. I am a bit reluctant in providing anymore details to Sky has I am through the second DLAM reset and when I spoke to them they were completely ignorant when talking to them about SNR and how did the first ten days went about. I was more hoping that having had a second DLAM reset as the BT Enigineer said that a fault was discovered which he had to fix on the cabinet the 38Mbps were staying as they initially were altough sadly today at the 7th day of these 10 days period, speed has already dropped to 32Mbps. Apart from fixing the Attenuation issue, do you know if there is any other relevant change that could affect the way this device works with the Sky network?

Thanks

If your speeds are slowley dropping it is most likley to be Cross Talk (other people in your area taking up VDSL is causing cross talk between the copper pairs).
VDSL is very susceptible to Cross Talk because of the very high frequencies, espicailly on the higher profiles such as 17a.

Mine dropped 10mbit in the first week as the SNR increased. (went from 66mbit to 55mbit).
It is something BT is going to have to sort out as it will be come worse and worse as time goes on, probibly why they block their openreach modem stats.

Also ignore Attanable Rate, these means nothing and I have no idea why people look at this figure. The most important ones are Line attentuation, SNR, Sync Speeds and error rates.

Here is a very good site to read...There is a solution using Vectoring and BT is still trailing it. (The 8800NL supports vectoring if when they do)

With the newer DMT code, you might see a improvement on the sync speeds, but every line is different so its a matter of testing it and seeing the results, I wouldn't advise to do that now, if you are still within the training period.

When is the new code due to be released? or is there going to be like a BETA program for this? Do you know if Billion would cover me in the case I brick myself out of the Sky Network if the code goes really wrong ?

The firmware will be released soon, and you don't have to worry about bricking the unit as it has a boot rom recovery built in (just like a iphone recovery process)

The code will be fine, it is the latest release from broadcom

That is excellent news, I look forward to test this as soon as it becomes available.

Quick question.

Will the new firmware fix the problem where you can't enter anything in the "MAC Spoofing" option in the PTM Interface configuration page when using "IP over Ethernet"?
It's OK in the ATM and ETH interface configurations pages.

From looking at the new firmware, it will not allow you to use the 'MAC Spoofing function' when using 'IP over ethernet'

I will check with our engineers about this :D
